A Reality Show President in A Crisis: Political Bullshit and Lies

Lying is a deliberate misrepresentation of facts intended to mislead others to further one’s own interests, typically power and recognition.

Bullshitting is an indifference to truth, “facts” are chosen for their usefulness to one’s interests, typically power and recognition.

In the case of a narcissist who doesn’t read or respect the expertise of what public health officials or other professionals have to say, it’s not always obvious which is which—my guess is in caps.

February 10: Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away. I hope that’s true.”  BULLSHIT SELF-PROTECTION

February 24: The Coronavirus is very much under control.”
BULLSHIT SELF-PROTECTION. (Not even wishful thinking, by this date the data on the likely spread of the virus was considerable.)

February 26 “This is a flu. This is like a flu.” BULLSHIT SELF-PROTECTION (For months it was known to have a much higher mortality rate and spreads more quickly)

February 26 We’re going very substantially down, not up.”  “And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done.” A LIE, ALBEIT DIFFICULT TO PARSE.

February 27: “It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear.”  BULLSHIT SELF PROTECTION

February 28″The Democrat policy of open borders is a direct threat to the health and well-being of all Americans. Now you see it with the coronavirus, you see it.You see it with the coronavirus.”  A LIE/FABRICATION WITHOUT EVIDENCE (It either came across the border that Democrats won’t close or it’s the Chinese virus—either way let’s turn a human crisis into anger and blame).

March 2: “We had a great meeting today with a lot of the great companies and they’re going to have vaccines, I think relatively soon. And they’re going to have something that makes you better and that’s going to actually take place, we think, even sooner.” BULLSHIT SELF-PROTECTION

March 2: “the Obama administration made a decision on testing that turned out to be very detrimental to what we’re doing. And we undid that decision a few days ago so that the testing can take place in a much more accurate and rapid fashion. A LIE/FABRICATION WITHOUT EVIDENCE.  (This never happened)

March 4: Speaking about deaths from the flu, Trump said on March 4: “I think we went as high as 100,000 people died in 1990, if you can believe that.” BULLSHIT SELF-PROTECTION. (Making up numbers to minimize threat)

March 6: “Anyone who wants a test can get one.” A LIE. Wasn’t true on March 6, isn’t true on March 24)

March 16: “This is a pandemic, I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic.” TOTALLY SHAMELESS PATHETICALLY TRANSPARENT BULLSHIT.

March 19: He said that a decades old malaria drug had been approved to treat COBID-19 and could be a “game changer.” BULLSHIT. (The drug has not been approved and has not yet had a clinical trial to see if it benefits patients)

  1. The March 16 analysis is my favorite. I know the situation is nothing to laugh about but I was laughing anyway. “There is a sense of being in anger” Toni Morrison wrote–and there’s a sense of solidarity in reading this column in which a good man calls out a narcissist (and by extension, calls out all those who are supporting and enabling him.) Thanks Phil, and stay well.
